Protecting Snow Leopards and their Prey in Russia's Altai Republic

Wildland Security made a preliminary expedition to the Altai Mountains in 2006, where snow leopards and their prey, argali sheep and the ibex are under threat of poaching.

This year, as part of a UNDP/GEF program, Wildland Security will be returning to install its TrailGuards anti-poaching system. In addition to sensors placed along trails to detect the passage of poachers, we will also be installing sensors in cabins and campsites frequented by poachers. Poaching of snow leopards is done in the winter - because their pelts are in better condition and bring more money. So hunters typically seek shelter in cabins - which if alarmed with detectors - will themseves become traps for the poachers.
